Best Practices For Wrapping Up The School Year

Best Practices For Wrapping Up The School Year TeacherVision's Head Of Content And Curriculum, Julie, shares her tips and best practices for wrapping up the school year. You may feel that there is too much to do and not enough time. Here's where and what to focus on. by Julie Mason Whether you have already started to count down the days or you haven't started thinking about how to wrap up the school year, here are my tips and strategies for where to focus your time and energy so you leave on the last day before summer feeling great about your finish.   Did you make a plan or goal in the beginning of the year, and now you are realizing you haven't prioritized it?   This happened to me every year I taught.   One year, I wanted to focus on making students' progress visible.   In an attempt to make my students’ progress visible to them, I gave each student a folder, and after I returned assignments and projects, I asked them to keep it in the folder. My goal was to make my students’ progress visible to them, so they had evidence of their growth. I have always believed that we need to help our students see that learning is a process that takes time. Whether or not they learned something isn’t always determined by a test grade. Fast forward to the last two months of school, and I was in a rush to get through my curriculum. I was waking up in the middle of the night worried that we weren’t going to fit in one last essay or finish our last whole class novel. When was I going to find the time for students to look through their folders? How could I make this process meaningful and worth class time? Quality Over Quantity When you have limited teaching time left, you might feel pressure to pack it all in, and increase your pace. Instead of assigning one chapter, you assign two. Instead of spending fifteen minutes practicing grammar skills before the quiz, you cut it down to ten. While this is tempting, try to take a step back and consider the big picture, and prioritize. Use These Guiding Questions What do my students need to learn and practice in order to be ready for next year? What parts of the curriculum are essential? What parts of the curriculum are non-essential?   One of the ways that I addressed having too much to teach and not enough time, was to assign related thematic passages from our last novel, instead of the entire text. I decided that what my students needed to learn and practice was close reading and marking up the text. They didn’t need to read an entire novel in order to do this practice. Focus On What’s Important Too often the end of the school year becomes a race to the finish, and there is little to no time to celebrate the class community and the students’ progress. What will impact your students most? A few more hours of grammar instruction? A reflective writing assignment where they consider what they learned and what goals they have for next year? Try to strike a balance between teaching topics and skills, and providing opportunities for celebration and reflection. Make Student Progress Visible Let’s go back to the folders. I believe that if we create a system and ask students to do something that we have to show them that that process had a purpose. If I didn’t circle back to the work in the folders why was I asking my students to keep their returned work? One of my favorite ways to make student progress visible is to take an assignment that I gave students earlier in the year and give them the same assignment towards the end of the year. For example, one of the first writing assignments I gave students was to write a descriptive paragraph about a photograph. I had an entire box full of images that they could choose from. Students do the same assignment later in the year and the improvement in their writing was always powerful. They included figurative language, and sensory details, and their grammar and syntax was stronger. After students have completed the assignment for a second time, you have students put both assignments side by side. They can then see the progress that they’ve made. I like to give students a checklist of writing skills and topics and ask them to think about their progress in each of those areas. By the end of this exercise, students feel proud of themselves, especially students who thought they weren’t doing well or getting a good grade in my class. They had tangible proof of their own growth and the activity is both an opportunity for reflection and celebration. Make Your Own Progress Visible We never have enough time in our teaching days, and self-reflection always falls to the bottom of our to-do list. However, self-reflection is incredibly important at the end of the school year. Consider all of your routines and procedures and identify what you want to use next year, and what you want to stop using or change. Try to jot down as much as you can about the specific changes you plan to make so your notes will be helpful as you prepare to return to the classroom. Give Yourself Glows and Grows Practice what you preach. We encourage our students to identify what they have learned and how they have grown, while also recognizing their challenges and the areas they can work on. Think about this teaching year. What are you most proud of? Was there a new assignment that went really well? Did you figure out a system for grading that saved you time? Do you have a classroom routine for equitable participation that ensured you called on more students? Give credit where credit is due.   Consider also what didn’t go as well as you hoped. What are the areas of your teaching practice that you’d like to grow in? What might you do over the summer to learn more about these areas?   The last month of school is challenging. You might be feeling tired, and losing your passion and stamina for teaching. Despite the fatigue, consider trying some of these best practices so you wrap up your year in a thoughtful, and reflective way. Do you have any tips for wrapping up the school year? The Importance of Hymns in the Congregational Church Essay

The Importance of Hymns in the Congregational Church Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. Colossians 3:16 (NIV) The Congregational Church is not a new religion in the United States today. This early denomination dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries, a time in which England was involved in a revolt against the Established Church. This congregational way held new principles and views than the beliefs of the English church, many so radical that the followers were called Independents or Separatists. I have been raised in the Congregational Church, and it†¦show more content†¦Another significant aspect of the Congregational Church is the singing of hymns in the worship service. Hymns, psalms and spiritual songs all date back to the Bible, and they prove to be a serious part of Congregational worship and reverence of God(Johansson 126). Hymns were sung regularly by Gods people for inspiration, guidance, and expressing praise and devotion to God. This premise is confirmed by the more than two hundred references to singing all throughout the Bible, by the Jews, the New Testament Christians and the early church(Ashton 92). In my church we always sing at least two hymns every service, one usually relating to the theme of the sermon. The hymn is concerned first with rational content artistically revealed so that its performance would have an emotional impact based on a concrete objective worth. The hymns particular balance between reason and emotion makes it unsurpassed as a vehicle for praise, adoration, exhortation, education and narration. Many of us that have been exposed to hymn singing in church have groaned more than once when a is announced. We tend to think that the music and lyrics are so outdated and old-fashioned. These were words that our great- grandparents may have sung, and this fact turns many off. Perfume Analysis Free Essays

FACH2702 Practical Analysis of imposter perfumes Aim: To determine which out of 4 unknown samples are genuine perfumes, and which are imposter/fake perfumes. This will be done by analysing gas chromatography plots, and comparing the components in the samples to that of a known standard perfume. Results: To determine which of the four sample perfumes where imposter and which were real, components present in each perfume were analysed using gas chromatography and compared to the known real perfume sample. We will write a custom essay sample on Perfume Analysis or any similar topic only for you Order Now The components identified for comparison included vanillin, 3-penten-2-one, diethyl phthalate and cyclopentanaecetic acid. The relative concentration of each of the components in the samples was calculated for comparison. In the control sample, the relative concentration of each of these components were calculated using the area under each of the peaks (appendix 3): The same was done for unknown perfume sample 1 and it was found that while the relative concentrations of each component were close to the control perfume, they were not close enough to conclude that the sample was a real perfume, (however a very good rip off). (appendix 4) After analysing perfume sample 2, we could conclude that this sample was an imposter perfume as there was a significant increase in both 3-pentan-2-one and cyclopentanaecetic acid, to substitute for the loss in diethyl phthalate. (appendix 5). Sample 3 showed relative concentrations of each compound that were very close to the control sample, hence it was classed as a real perfume (appendix 6) It was found that sample 4’s relative concentrations of each component were completely off that of the control perfume, hence it is an imposter perfume. appendix 7) Discussion: There weren’t many areas for errors in this practical that would be attributed to our own human error. The gas chromatographer itself was very repeatable and hence the only error in the computers results would be due to a calibration error. Another error in this experiment could be linked to the preparation of the samples, some components in the perfumes are very volatile and hence if the cap were left off the perfume, concentrations of those components would decrease, altering the detection during analysis. Conclusion: Using Gas chromatography, the components vanillin, diethyl phthalate, 3-pentan-2-one and cyclopentanaecetic acid were analysed in four samples and their relative concentrations were calculated and compared to a known control perfume sample. From these calculations, it was concluded that samples 1,2 and 4 were imposter perfumes, while sample 3 had very similar relative concentrations of its compounds and was hence classed as a real perfume. Value of Education free essay sample

There are many facets that give value to an education; however, the cost cannot be ignored. Parents make the initial choices for their children’s education. The choice is primarily based on economics, but parents’ own educational experiences also affect the choice. The cost of public or private education, even at the elementary level, is considerable. The only difference is that one is paid through taxes and the other by private individuals. Having attended only private schools, my perspective may be somewhat biased. However, a child’s education, whether private or public, is reflective of what the parent values. Is there a way to measure the value of the costs? The current education system measures how well students progress through testing; however, if Susie gets an A and Johnny gets a C on the same test it does not necessarily mean that Susie got more value than Johnny. Faculty, administration, and class size vary from school to school and in public education there is usually no choice. We will write a custom essay sample on Value of Education or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Some may find greater educational value in having choices in those areas. Private schools give more options, and in the case of post-secondary education, a student can be selective and find the institution that fits his or her goals. This is not to say, however, that the public education system should remain stagnant in their roles. Finding ways to motivate students to truly learn and enjoy learning through creative methods is necessary. It may be difficult for parents or students to perceive value strictly through what is taught in the classroom. Learning moved outside of the classroom walls and into the world around them provides students with a new perspective that is liberating for many. Helping students learn life skills along with book knowledge creates value. For example, teaching a student math skills and then applying those skills in balancing a check book generates value into the learning process. Another thing that creates value in education is the realization that individuals are unique and that each student learns in a different way and at a different pace. Each student needs to learn their own strengths and weaknesses through a variety of learning methods. Giving options to students such as either write a paper on a particular subject or make a power point presentation on the same subject adds value through the student’s individual choice. School curricula that teach a one size fits all approach fall short of providing students with the motivation to learn. I believe one of the reasons for the dramatic increase in home-schooling stems from the lack of public schools to customize the learning process in the world we live in today. According to Daniel H. Pink in his essay â€Å"School’s Out†, students being home-schooled increased from approximately 15,000 in 1980 to 300,000 in 1990 and are well over 1. 5 million now (90). That is a 1900% increase over a decade of time and still growing. Pink also states that, â€Å"Home-schooled children consistently score higher than traditional students on standardized achievement tests†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (91). The learning environment in home-schooling must be motivating the students to excel. I disagree with Pink’s assertion that home-schooled kids are socially well rounded, however. The drawback is the lack of social activity with people of the same age. Home-schooled kids miss out on the day to day social growth that occurs in the traditional school setting. I have known a number of high school aged home-schooled kids that came for a class once a week at the private school I attended, and they each seemed socially challenged to some degree. Our school included them in the extra-curricular activities offered which provided an avenue for greater social interaction. Nevertheless, there appears to be value in the customized approach to education that home-schooling allows. Another aspect of valuing an education, in particular a college education, is a monetary one. The earnings potential of receiving a college degree drives many students to pursue a post-secondary education. Cheever points out that college graduates are likely to make much more money in their lifetimes than those with only a high school education (103). One thing that needs to be factored into that calculation though is the amount of debt a student will have to epay after graduating. Student loans usually have a 5% to 6% interest rate that adds up through the years. For example, one of my cousins who graduated from college in 2000 is still repaying student loans. Even though they may be earning a decent salary, in our current economy, it may make it more difficult for a college graduate to purchase a home, have a family or save for retirement when overloaded with educational debt . This issue makes a case that the cost of education may be too high for those that cannot pay the tuition without going into debt. Students and parents should be expected to pay for the largest portion of a college education; however, the costs need to be less prohibitive for that to reasonably happen. I realize there are scholarships and grants that help many students, but the vast majority of students find it necessary to either have a job while in college or borrow the money. Is there any value in becoming indebted for ten to fifteen years to pay for an education? Parents should help their kids understand the ramifications of too much debt. Students may get all caught up in the glamour of going to college and not think about the effect the cost may have in the future. I am aware of instances where college graduates have had to go outside of their major field of study to find a job that paid enough to support them and the educational debts they carried. Putting a value on the time it takes to pay back the loans and the other things that may be unattainable until they are paid is difficult to measure. I have discussed a few of the facets that give value to education. In my opinion however, the value of an education is subjective to each individual. For instance, someone who attends a certain college because parents, siblings or grandparents attended may be valuable to them, even though there are less expensive or better colleges suiting their interests. A person may choose a certain institution of higher education solely based on its reputation for the specific field of study the student pursues which they find valuable. Parents may choose a private school over public because they see value in the smaller class size or in a particular emphasis of study the school provides. Cheever states that, â€Å"Focusing on educational value, and not solely on cost, means that students, parents, faculty and administrators must ask tough questions† (103). Since I believe value is a personal determination, those questions would be different for each individual. Something that I deem valuable may not be valuable to the next student. Due to the high cost and the vast variety of options for post-secondary education, a thorough examination of what one values is a wise first step in evaluating if one should attend college or which college to attend. The investment one is required to make for an education is significant and should not be taken lightly. Only the individual can decide if the courses taught and the methods used in comparison to the money spent is worth it. The true value of an education may not be known for many years after the money has been spent.
